NC State to Hold Symposium on English as Second Language Education

Internationally recognized scholars, experts, and K-12 and college personnel involved in English as a Second Language (ESL) education will convene at North Carolina State University for the first of what is scheduled to be an annual ESL Symposium. The event, which will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, will be held at NC State's Talley Student Center on main campus.

Media coverage of this increasingly important topic in North Carolina is encouraged.

Featured speakers include:

  • Drs. Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas, internationally recognized researchers on long-term school effectiveness for linguistically and culturally diverse students;
  • Dr. Joanne Hershfield and Penny Simpson, directors of a documentary, "Nuestra Communidad: Latinos in North Carolina," on the impact of a rapidly increasing Spanish-speaking population in North Carolina. The documentary will be shown and Hershfield and Simpson will answer questions from the audience;
  • Dr. Dorothy Kauffman, whose book, The Oxford Picture Dictionary for the Content Areas, helps teachers make learning English easier for ESL students;
  • Dr. Nolo Martinez, North Carolina's director of Hispanic/Latino affairs, who will discuss how community development and economic self-sufficiency are directly related to successful ESL programs;
  • Dr. Walt Wolfram, an internationally recognized sociolinguist who will examine the roles of dialects in ESL curricula.

The symposium is supported by a five-year $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to NC State's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The grant helps NC State train and license K-12 schoolteachers in ESL.

For more information on the symposium, check the Web at http://sasw.ncsu.edu/esl/symposium_index.htm.
