Two North Carolina State University students have won Goldwater Scholarship Awards for the 2001-02 academic year.

Gregory J. Barlow of Greensboro, a sophomore majoring in electrical and computer engineering, and Catherine M. Ward of Apex, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering and biochemistry, have received Goldwater Scholarships. The awards are based on academic merit and cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Nationwide, a total of 302 Goldwater Scholars were selected this year from a field of 1,164 students in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. Scholars are selected by the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, a federally endowed agency established in 1986 to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Barlow is the son of John B. and Cheryl S. Barlow of 10 Roundtree Court in Greensboro. He graduated in 1999 from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. At NC State, he is a Caldwell Scholar and member of the University Scholars Program, and has received an NC State Undergraduate Research Award to study artificial evolution using evolvable hardware at the NC State Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines.

Barlow is vice-chairman of the NC State student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of numerous honor societies, including Eta Kappa Nu Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in intelligent machines and robotics, with an eye toward a career in industrial sector research.

Ward is the daughter of Tom R. and Denise K. Ward of 1805 Martin’s Chapel Road in Apex. She graduated from Durham Academy in 1999. At NC State, she is a Caldwell Scholar and member of the University Scholars Program, and is currently working on an independent project on genetic mapping in an entomology lab.

Ward will soon be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and numerous other honor societies including Omega Chi Epsilon Chemical Engineering Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Delta Life Sciences Honor Society. She plans to obtain a Ph.D. in genetics and/or genetic engineering, and pursue a career in genetic testing or gene modification therapy in an industrial or university setting.
