NC State's Provost Hall Chosen President of Utah State University

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Utah State University today announced it has chosen Dr. Kermit Hall, provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs at North Carolina State University, as its president.

Hall, 56, has served as provost at NC State since July 1999. He previously served as executive dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University from 1994 to 1999.

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said, "When I hired Kermit as provost, I knew he was destined to lead a major university. We are fortunate, indeed, for the time he has spent with us and for his innovative academic leadership. His tenure at NC State has been marked by significant achievements in strengthening the promotion and tenure process, encouraging multidisciplinary collaborations across academic units, enhancing our approaches to diversity, and incorporating technology into our teaching and research."

As provost at NC State, Hall served as the university's chief academic officer, managing all aspects of education and scholarship at the university. In addition, the deans of all colleges and schools, and their faculty and research personnel, reported to him.

Utah State University is a four-year, land-grant university with a 400-acre campus overlooking the city of Logan in northern Utah. More than 20,000 students are enrolled on campus or at education centers throughout the state. The university is composed of eight academic colleges, as well as a School of Graduate Studies.

Hall will be the 14th president of Utah State, succeeding President George H. Emert, who announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2000. Hall will take office in January.
