Hendricks to be Chair of Resource Economics Center Advisory Board

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

James R. Hendricks Jr. of Charlotte, Duke Energy Corporation's vice president of corporate environment, health and safety, has been named head of an advisory committee for the proposed Center for Environmental Resource and Economic Policy at North Carolina State University.

Made up of community, environmental and business representatives, the committee will help the proposed center identify significant resource and environmental problems facing North Carolina and the nation. The panel will also help disseminate findings from the center's research activities.

Plans are for the center to facilitate coordinated research among natural and social scientists developing information and analysis related to environmental policy. It will be based in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The University of North Carolina General Administration has given NC State authorization to plan the multidisciplinary center with the goal of linking science, agriculture and technology to enhance environmental resource management. The center will be directed by Dr. V. Kerry Smith, NC State University Distinguished Professor of agricultural and resource economics.

Smith said, "Jim Hendricks is ideally suited to head the center's advisory committee, for he has had direct experience with balancing the private and public perspectives necessary to deal with environmental issues. Moreover, he has fulfilled this leadership role for a range of environmental policy groups."

Hendricks, who has held his current position at Duke Energy since 1997, is vice chairman of the Clean Air Strategy Group and past chairman of the Environmental Executive Advisory Committee of the Edison Electric Institute. He is a member of the Conference Board's Chief Environmental Health and Safety Officers Council, The Nature Conservancy's International Leadership Council, and the Resources for the Future Council.
