1996 Junior Beef Round-Up

The 1996 Junior Beef Round-Up will be held May 17-19 in Winston-Salem at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. The Ramada Inn will serve as this year's Hotel headquarters. Please make your reservations early as this year the JBRU is on the same weekend as Wake Forest Graduation. Rooms will be hard to find.

The information that follows includes the agenda, rules for the various activities and educational events rules, entry forms and hotel information. Please read the information carefully. Entry deadline is May 1. If you plan to have a team in the Stockman's Bowl, please let us know via e-mail as the approximate number of youth that will be participating. We would appreciate this information by May 1 as well.

JUNIOR BEEF ROUND-UP
GENERAL RULES

  1. Open to N. C. junior exhibitors of heifers of the beef breeds and crosses of these breeds within the age limits set forth by the various N. C. state associations for exhibitors and animals. Out-of-state entries may be admitted on approval of the Round-Up Committee. Requests must be in no later than February 1 of the current year.

  2. The Show is for weaned heifers -- NO mother cows or nurse cows will be allowed on the Show Grounds except those in cow-calf pairs.

  3. ALL CATTLE MUST BE TIED IN THE BARN BY 9:00 A.M., Saturday and Sunday of the event.

  4. CATTLE MUST NOT BE FITTED. NO ADHESIVE, PAINT OR POWDER IS ALLOWED. CATTLE SHOULD BE WASHED, BRUSHED AND HALTERED. NO BLOCKING CHUTES WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE BARN.

  5. Individual breeds will be responsible for conducting their shows - rules and regulations, show classification.

  6. All animals and exhibitors tack must remain in place until officially released at the conclusion of the show. This also applies to breed association booths, and other exhibits.

  7. No hay or straw will be furnished. Exhibitors must bring their own.

  8. Tie-out space will be available and animals may be tied out after the showmanship contest in the designated tie-out area.

  9. All participants are requested to attend the Sunday morning vespers service. No clipping, grooming or washing will be permitted during the service.

  10. Any participating junior breed association may put up a booth by notifying the Chairman of the Round-Up Committee by May 1 of the current year.

  11. Tack space will be allocated by breeds -- one space per five head minimum.

  12. Breed association representatives will assign tie spaces in their designated areas.

  13. If an exhibitor has more than one animal per class, approval from the breed representative is required for a Junior Showman for the other animal.

  14. Neither the N. C. Cattlemen's Association nor the Dixie Classic Fair, nor members of the N. C. Junior Beef Round-Up Committee will be responsible for injuries or damage to animals, equipment or persons while attending the Junior Beef Round-up.

  15. All cattle must be accompanied by an official health certificate as stated in the health regulations (see below).

  16. Sponsors contributing $100.00 or more may have a display at the Show. Sponsors contributing $50.00 or more will have special posters placed around the Show Ring. Those contributing $25.00 or more will be listed in the program.

  18. Any item not covered in the above listed rules and regulations will be decided upon by the Junior Beef Round-Up Chairman.

HEALTH REGULATIONS FOR CATTLE EXHIBITED AT THE N. C. JUNIOR BEEF ROUND-UP

All cattle must be accompanied by an official health certificate signed by an accredited veterinarian or an approved State or Federally employed veterinarian. A copy of the approved health certificate should be attached to your entry or be presented before unloading at the Junior Beef Round-up. The health certificate should contain the following:

  1. Name and address of exhibitor.

  2. Description of each animal including breed, age sex and registration, tattoo, or ear tag numbers.

  3. A statement by the veterinarian signing the health certificate that the cattle listed are not infected with, or have been recently exposed to any communicable disease to the best of his knowledge.

  4. Information relating to Brucellosis.

  5. Date of certification - must be within 60 days of the show date for native N.C. cattle. Out-of-state cattle must meet any special requirements of the N. C. state requirements.

RULES FOR SHOWMANSHIP

  1. Open to all youth that are exhibitors in the JBRU.

  2. Participants must exhibit the animal(s) entered in the exhibitors' name.

  3. Judging is strictly on showmanship -- no fitting. (Clipped, washed, and brushed only).

  4. Classes will consist of at least 4 divisions that will show in the following order: Novice, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior.

    The Novice Class is for those exhibiting a beef animal for the first time who are in the Junior age bracket.

    The age brackets for each division will be determined after entries are received to balance classes.

  5. Division winners in the previous year must compete in the next highest age bracket regardless of age.

JBRU STOCKMAN'S BOWL CONTEST

Eligibility:

  1. Open to all youth and adults. Youth and adults need not own or exhibit livestock in order to participate.

  2. Junior division is open only to those youths who have not reached their 14th birthday before January 1 of the current year.

  3. Senior Division is open only to those youth who have reached their 14th birthday as of January of the current year and who have not reached their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current year.

  4. Adult Division is open to those who have reached their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current year or in circumstances outlined in E. and F.

  5. Individuals who have enrolled in a post secondary university, college, junior college or technical institute beyond the first semester or quarter of the current year are not eligible for participation in the Senior Division but are eligible to compete in the Adult Division.

  6. Individuals who have participated in the Regional or National Contests, as team members or as alternates, are not eligible to compete in the Senior Division, but are eligible to compete in the Adult Division.

Rules & Regulations:

  1. Each county may enter an unlimited number of senior and/or junior teams and individuals. Counties must designate teams and individuals by age categories: Junior, Senior or Adult Divisions.

  2. The entry form must be completed in its entirety and postmarked by the deadline date before it will be accepted for registration purposes. Late entries will be accepted based on availability of contest packets. However, preregistration is recommended.

  3. A team will consist of 3 or 4 club members. The team score will be a total of the 3 high individual scores from the designated team.

  4. Contestants will be divided into 4 groups for the contest. They will remain in these groups throughout the entire contest.

  5. The no-talking rule will be strictly enforced. Contestants may not talk to each other. Questions for information or clarification of instructions should be directed to group leaders or officials. If contestants are caught talking or cheating, they will be removed from the contest.

  6. Feedstuff Evaluation: Three classes of feedstuff consisting of four (4) hays or grains worth a total of 50 points per class. These classes will be judged & placed in proper order (1st through 4th). Evaluate each feedstuff for quality & suitability as a livestock feed. Touching of the feedstuff is not allowed. Total points for this division is 150 points.

  7. Visual Identification: Contestants will visually identify feedstuffs, tools, and various livestock equipment. Each age division will identify twenty-five (25) different items worth a total of 125 points. Contestants may not handle the items. Twenty (20) seconds will be the allotted time for identifying each item.

  8. Written Exams: One 25 question written exams shall be given separately to juniors and to seniors. The test will be different for each age division. Questions will consist of nutrition, health, breeding, management, genetics and showmanship. The exam is worth 125 points.

  9. Livestock Evaluation: Three classes of market or breeding livestock consisting of four (4) animals per class. Each class is worth a total of 50 points per class. These classes will be judged & placed in proper order (1st through 4th). Total points for this division is 150 points. Oral Reasons will not be required.

  10. Meats and Breed Identification: Twenty-five (25) items will be provided for identification purposes. This section is worth 100 points.

  11. Total individual scores will consist of combined scores from feedstuffs judging, visual identification, written exam, livestock evaluation, and meats and breed identification. Ties will be broken accordingly:

    1. Highest score on the written exam.
    2. Combined scores of the written exam plus feedstuff evaluation score.
    3. Combined scores of the written exam, feedstuff evaluation score, plus the visual identification scores.
    4. Combined scores of the written exam, feedstuff evaluation score, visual identification plus the meats and breed identification score.

JBRU PROGRESS STEER RULES

  1. All general rules of the North Carolina Junior Beef Round-Up apply unless addressed in the JBRU Steer Rules.

  2. Open to North Carolina junior exhibitors of purebred and crossbred steers that have not reached his/her 21st birthday prior to January 1 of the current year.

  3. All prospect and progress steers must have all their milk teeth at the time of exhibition.

  4. Minimum of 5 steers is required to have a breed show. If not possible, there will be a division for British Breeds, Exotic Breeds, and American Breeds. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from division winners.

  5. Steers will be viewed by a breed classification committee prior to weighing the steers. Desired breed classification should be written on an index card and presented to the classification committee at viewing. Breed classification will be determined by the committee and committee decisions are final. Breeds will be classified as outlined by the respective breeds Junior National steer rules.

  6. Classes will be broken by weight.

  7. The steer show will begin immediately following showmanship on Saturday of the North Carolina Junior Beef Round-Up.

HERDSMANSHIP COMPETITION

Herdsmanship Awards will be given to the top three Breeds of the Round-up. The contest will start on opening day of the Junior Beef Round-Up and winners will be announced prior to the cattle release. A representative from each breed will be present in the show ring prior to and during the announcement of the winners. Breed Associations will receive the following:
