A Very Successful Junior Beef Round Up

The 14th Annual NC Junior Beef Round-Up was held at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds in Winston-Salem. The educational junior weekend was sponsored by the cooperative efforts of the N.C. Cattlemen's Purebred Breeders Council, N.C. Cooperative Extension Service Department of Animal Science, N.C. Angus Association, N.C. Cattlemen's Association, N.C. Charolais Association, N.C. Gelbvieh Association, N.C. Hereford Breeder's Association, Limousin Breeder's of the Carolinas, N.C. Polled Hereford Association, N.C. Shorthorn Breeder's Association, N.C. Simmental Association, North Central Farm Credit ACA, Northern Piedmont Jr. Livestock Show, Purina Mills, Roche Animal Health and Nutrition, Show Stoppers Supplies, Inc., Virginia-North Carolina Select Sires, Inc.

The Stockman's Bowl, an educational contest designed to challenge contestants on their knowledge of the livestock industry, was one of the activities held with tremendous participation. One hundred fifty contestants were evaluated on written tests, equipment identification, meat and breed identification, and cattle evaluation. Questions ranged in difficulty according to the three different age divisions and covered all aspects of the cattle industry.

Team competition results for the Junior Division were Pitt County with a score of 1324, first; Johnston County with 1168 points, second; Wake County with 1079 points, third; Yadkin/Davie had 1068 points, fourth; and Gaston/Catawba with 1012 points rounded off the top five teams.

Top Senior team was Wilson County with a score of 1211 coached by Walter Earle. Davidson County was second with 1099 points, and Craven County was third with a score of 1094. Jones County was fourth with 1079 points and a combined team from Caldwell/Burke/Rockingham Counties placed fifth with 1076.

An exhibitors meeting was held to cover some of the rule changes and how the youth would be taking more responsibility on the committee. Then the educational weekend moved to the showmanship competition.

The Showmanship Competition started at 2:30 p.m. Judge Chan Phillips, Maysville, Kentucky spent a lot of time with each participant in the four divisions. Each youth should have left the ring more knowledgeable than when they entered. In the Novice Division (first time exhibitors), Ginny Pollock of Lenior County took top honors. Laura Steele, Monroe County, took the reserve placing.

In the Junior Division, Lucas Buff of Morganton was Champion showman. Reserve Champion went to Roger Johnson of Kenly. Katy McLean of Waynesville placed third, Anna Munday of Granite Falls placed fourth, and fifth place went to Joseph Andrews of Trenton.

In the Intermediate Division, Matthew Cox of Trenton took top honors and Stephanie Armstrong of Davidson placed second. Third place went to Tonya Buff from Morganton, fourth to Jennifer Prestwood of Lenoir, and fifth to Lauren Armstrong of Davidson.

Julie Scarlett of Snow Camp was Champion of the competitive Senior Division. Brent Scarlett of Snow Camp was second in this division. Jim Herman of Taylorsville placed third, Betsie Ebert from Lexington finished fourth, and Cammie Kirby of Lucama placed fifth.

The next event was the Progress Steer Show. In the British Division, Ryan Davis exhibited the Champion steer and Andy Burlingham had the Reserve. The Grand Champion and Exotic Division Champion steer was shown by Roger Johnson and Cammie Kirby had the Reserve Champion for the Exotic Division and overall. Matthew Cox was awarded Champion for his Limousin steer and April Woodard of Selma took Reserve in the Limousin breed.

On a pleasant Sunday morning, Reverend Tripp May of the Friedburg Moravian Church delivered an excellent devotional service. Shortly after the devotional service, the heifer shows began with the Simmental division.

The Simmental females then took to the tanbark to start the day. Jonathan Massey of Burlington exhibited the Champion Senior Heifer Calf sired by Black Irish Kansas. The Reserve Calf Champion, shown by Jeremy Taylor of Hendersonville was sired by R&R Wizard. Lucas Buff was showing the Junior Heifer Champion, Ms Hercules sired by Circle S Leachman 600U. Reserve Junior Heifer went to Ray Davis, Jr. of Wilson with SS Little Miss Powder sired DSR Black Powder Z13. Senior Heifer Champion and Reserve were shown by Tonya Buff. Lucas Buff's Junior Heifer Champion was selected for Grand Champion Heifer. Reserve Champion went to Tonya Buff's heifer from the Senior Division.

In the Angus show, Julie Scarlett was awarded Senior Heifer Calf Champion with Williams Burgess 1069FB3 sired by Fullback. Reserve Champion went to Brent Scarlett showing a heifer sired by GDAR Oscar 711. The Champion Intermediate Heifer was exhibited by Matthew Cox's Davis Monique 5217 sired by 3W3. Julie Scarlett won Reserve Champion. In the Junior Heifer division, Andy Clary of Brodnax,Virginia was awarded Champion with Daltons Georgina. Reserve Champion went to Jim Herman's female sired by EXT. Senior Heifer Champion went to Betsie Ebert with a Bonview Bando 598 daughter and Brent Scarlett won Reserve Champion Senior Heifer with another GDAR Oscar 711 female. Grand Champion Heifer was Daltons Georgina exhibited by Andy Clary. Julie Scarlett won Reserve Grand Champion with Williams Burgess 1069FB3. Matthew Cox exhibited the first place Cow/Calf Pair with a cow by Touchstone and a calf sired by Bonview Emulation EXT 473.

Following the Angus was the Charolais show. Scottie Hyatt of Randleman had the Intermediate Champion. Vickie Linville and Ryan Davis had the Junior Champion and Reserve Champions, respectively. In the Senior Heifer division, Jim Herman of Taylorsville was awarded Champion with DS Brandi 440 sired by Serendipity Bond 007. Reserve Champion was won by AC Sundrop 333 exhibited by Lauren Armstrong. Grand Champion Heifer of the Charolais breed was DS Brandi 440 owned by Jim Herman and Lauren Armstrong's Reserve Senior was Reserve Champion Overall.

The Grand Champion Commercial Heifer was a spring yearling named Snowy, exhibited by Amy Woodard of Selma. This heifer was sired by GDL Schwarzkopf. Vickie Linville, Madison, was showing the Reserve Grand Champion heifer, Flossie, another spring yearling.

The Gelbvieh had their first show held at the JBRU this year. Casey Ammons of Hamlet exhibited the Grand Champion female and Anna Fields had the Reserve Grand Champion. Ginny Pollock was the exhibitor of the Calf Champion of the breed.

In the Hereford Show, Jenna Kirkman of Greensboro took the top honor and Brittany Lookabill of Lexington had the Reserve Champion heifer.

The first Limousin heifer show to be held at the JBRU was next. Both Calf Champion and Reserve came from the mountains of North Carolina and were sired by DBRO Boomerang. Brent Yarski had the Champion for the division and Katy McLean of Waynesville exhibited the Reserve Champion. Bradley Johnson from Horse Shoe had both the Intermediate and Junior Champions and Brian Justice from Clyde had the Reserve Intermediate and Junior Champions. The Senior Division Champion was another DBRO Boomerang calf exhibited by Katy McLean. Reserve Senior Champion was Ashley Andrews' entry Cox's Sue 15. The Grand Champion was the Senior Yearling exhibited by Katy McLean and the Reserve Champion was a paternal sister from the calf division shown by Brent Yarski.

Polled Herefords were the next breed to be exhibited. Jennifer Prestwood was the owner of the Champion Heifer Calf and Anna Munday exhibited the Reserve Champion Senior Heifer Calf. The Calf Champion was sired by GK Genetic Explosion. Seth Coleman of Reidsville exhibited the Champion Junior Heifer, and Anna Munday exhibited another Reserve. Senior Heifer Champion and Reserve were exhibited by Amanda Brooks of Rural Hall. This division heifer was OH Sarah's Girl sired by WTK 55Y Bond 57A. Grand Champion Heifer was awarded to the Calf Champion exhibited Jennifer Prestwood, PPH Dyna Miss E20. Amanda Brooks exhibited Reserve Grand Champion heifer that had previously won the Senior Division.

Alex Harrill, Lawndale, captured the Champion spot in the Shorthorn show with Sutherland Maid 440. Alex's champion heifer is a daughter of Woodland 57 Levy ET. The Reserve Grand Champion was awarded to Eddie Harrill with his calf entry EH Linda Evans sired by CCS Marc Drive.

The Charolais exhibitors took top honors in the Herdsmanship Awards. Simmental exhibitors were second, followed by the Polled Hereford exhibitors in third.

Young people, cattle, and educational opportunities surrounded the barns of the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. The juniors truly ran the show. They announced, served as ring stewards, and presented awards. The efforts set forth by all involved are greatly appreciated, as the future livestock producers learn and grow to understand many facets of the beef industry.
